It is located on the East side of Smoak Drive, 100 yards behind the present home of Mr. John Harrison. Latitude N 34 46.081 x Longitude W 82 30.056 CHURCH/CEMETERY HISTORY: ------------------------ This Cemetery goes back to the early 1800s when William Berry Durham, Sr. and his family lived in the area. Older Durham relatives say William Berry Durham, Jr.'s wife, Lucinda, was buried in the Durham Cemetery off Smoak Road behind John Harrison's house. If that is the case, then her husband, William Berry Durham, Jr. and his parents are probably buried there. The land was sold before 1874, so no one was buried there after that date. TOMBSTONE TRANSCRIPTION NOTES: ------------------------------ a. = age at death b. = date-of-birth d. = date-of-death h. = husband m. = married p. = parents w. = wife Annie Lou Roe (McWhorter) said her mother knew the names and where most of the people were located in the cemetery. She, Etta Rodgers Roe, died in 1971 at the age of 94 years old. All information about the cemetery was lost. There are no readable grave markers at the Durham Cemetery. Only field stones mark the head and feet. Annie Lou Roe (McWhorter) said there were approximately 25 graves in the 100 X 100 foot grave site when she was a little girl. The grave site is grown over with popular trees and, in the Spring, covered with little blue flowers called Cemetery Grass (Vinca or Periwinkle).
